We believe every pair of our boots tells a unique story. Ours begins in the historically Black community of Acres Homes, a once rural land space, just outside the city limits of Houston, Texas. Named as a result of land developers selling plots by the acre rather than the lot, Acres Homes established one of the largest, unincorporated Black communities in the South. Local residents fondly call it “The 44,” paying homage to the #44 METRO bus route (formerly a Black-owned transit company) that connects this rural neighborhood to downtown Houston.

Today, “The 44” remains a vital part of Houston’s cultural identity, and we honor this legacy by adopting the namesake. Along with the “44” name, we are ever vigilant of the 19th century American history of the cowboy. The term cowboy has interesting origins. Originally, White cowboys were called “cowhands,” and African Americans were pejoratively referred to as “cowboys.” African American men being called “boy,” regardless of their age, stems from chattel slavery and the plantation era in the South.

These histories serve as the anchor of Four Four Boot Company.
